I am hopeful that this attempt to grow squash will be slug proof. The tray is acting as a moat to prevent slugs reaching the pot.
The tray is standing on ground control fabric, which should keep the fruit clean later in the summer. I have filled the pot with a very rich mixture of well rotted manure and soil. Unlike planting directly in the ground, it will be much easier to find ‘the heart’ of the plant once it throws out runners in all directions.
