Seeing rhubarb bursting through the ground in late winter helps lift my spirits, the combination of brightly coloured stalks adding colour to the plot, and the thought that eating crumble is not too far away.

Rhubarb is not a crop that demands attention – it bursts through the winter cold without the need for cold protection, and its tall stems and big leaves are enough to smoother weeds during the summer.
